Two Children Drown in Separate Incidents as Police Urge Caution During Heavy Rains

The police in Thohoyandou are investigating an inquest docket following the drowning of a six-year-old girl at Tshilapfene Village, under the Thohoyandou policing area.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on Saturday, 17 January 2026, at approximately 14:00. The child was on her way to a local shop to buy bread with other children when she attempted to cross a stream known as the Gobe River. She was swept away by strong, raging waters, while the other children managed to cross safely.

Parents and community members were alerted and immediately launched a search. The child was later found drowned. Police were summoned to the scene, where an inquest docket was opened, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) certified her dead. The deceased’s name has been withheld.

In a separate incident, police in Giyani were summoned to Nkomo Village 22B on Thursday evening, 15 January 2026. Upon arrival, officers found a woman who pointed out the lifeless body of her two-year-old son.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the toddler fell into a pit toilet filled with water and drowned. An inquest docket has also been opened in this matter.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has urged members of the public—particularly those affected by floods and heavy rains—to avoid crossing rivers and overflowing streams. She further appealed to parents and guardians to maintain constant supervision of children during the current rainy conditions.
