A major breakthrough has been made in the investigation into the brutal murder and robbery of a 74-year-old headman, Mr Ntshweng Joseph Ramphisa, at Makhuthuthela Village in Nebo, Sekhukhune District.
Ramphisa was attacked at his home on Monday evening, 02 February 2026. Police said the victim was found tied up inside the house, lying in a pool of blood with multiple open wounds. He was certified dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had arrived at the homestead in a white bakkie and stole various household items. A relative who returned home during the incident reportedly found the suspects in the act but was overpowered and tied up by the assailants.
Following intelligence-driven operations carried out between 22:00 on 05 February and 09:30 on 06 February, a joint team comprising the Sekhukhune District Tracking and Investigation Team, the Provincial Investigation Unit and Marble Hall detectives arrested a 54-year-old suspect at Makhuthuthela Village.
A second suspect, aged 45, was later traced and arrested in Marble Hall. He was found in possession of a Chevrolet Utility bakkie that had been reported hijacked in November 2018 at Moroka SAPS in Gauteng. Police subsequently added a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
The two suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 February 2026.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the officers involved in the operation.
“This breakthrough reflects the dedication of our members in ensuring that violent criminals are traced and brought to book without delay,” she said.
Police investigations are continuing, and further arrests have not been ruled out.
