Teen, Relative Arrested After Ammunition Found at Malamulele School

Police recover firearm and dozens of rounds following swift follow-up at Mahonisi Village.

Police in Malamulele have arrested a 15-year-old boy and his 37-year-old male relative for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition after bullets were discovered at a local high school.

The arrests were made on Thursday, 05 February 2026, at about 12:00 in Mahonisi Village, within the Malamulele policing area in the Vhembe District.

According to police, officers were summoned to the school after three live rounds of ammunition were confiscated from the teenager on the premises. Preliminary investigations indicated that the ammunition belonged to an adult relative.

Police then proceeded to the learner’s home, where the 37-year-old man was located. A further search led to the recovery of 39 additional rounds of ammunition, a firearm concealed in a holster, a magazine, and empty cartridges that had been hidden in various spots in nearby bushes.

The adult suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 February 2026.

The matter involving the minor was dealt with in line with the provisions of the Child Justice Act.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the quick response by both police and school authorities. She emphasised that illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, especially where children are involved, will not be tolerated as it threatens the safety of communities and learning institutions.

Police investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
