KwaMashu Community in Shock as Family Dispute Turns Fatal.
A 35-year-old man was brutally beaten to death in KwaMashu after being falsely accused of stealing a firearm that was later found elsewhere, police have confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Sphiwe Ndlazi, was visiting his family home with his young daughter when a confrontation broke out after his uncle accused him of taking a missing gun. The argument quickly escalated into violence.
According to sources close to the investigation, Ndlazi repeatedly denied any involvement in the alleged theft. Despite his pleas, he was allegedly assaulted by his uncle and the man’s 26-year-old daughter, reportedly in full view of Ndlazi’s child.
Neighbours said they heard screams for help coming from the homestead but were too frightened to intervene due to the brutality of the attack.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that officers were summoned to the scene after Ndlazi was found lying unconscious.
“The deceased sustained multiple injuries consistent with a severe beating,” said Mbele. “A murder case has been opened, and two suspects — a 58-year-old man and his 26-year-old daughter — have been arrested.”
In a tragic development, investigators later recovered the missing firearm in a nearby area, confirming that Ndlazi had no connection to the alleged theft.
The killing has left the KwaMashu community reeling.
Residents described Ndlazi as a man who had worked hard to turn his life around after a troubled past and was focused on building a better future for his daughter.
“He was no longer the person people once feared,” said a local resident. “He had changed his life, and to be killed like this — especially in front of his child — is devastating.”
Local organisations have condemned the killing and called for justice. They have also urged authorities to provide trauma counselling for the child who witnessed the attack.
Community leaders warned that vigilante-style violence, driven by suspicion and anger, continues to claim innocent lives and tear families apart.
