Municipality Intensifies “Operation Patala” to Recover Over R1 Billion in Outstanding Debt

The Mookgophong Local Municipality has intensified its revenue-collection drive, dubbed “Operation Patala,” targeting residents, businesses, and government entities that collectively owe more than R1 billion for municipal services.

According to the Municipality’s Communication Manager Mr Michael Makungo, residents account for the largest portion of the debt, owing more than R1 billion. Businesses owe an estimated R380 million, while government entities are in arrears to the tune of R98 million for services including water and electricity.

Revenue Collection at 52%

Municipal officials say Operation Patala was launched in response to poor revenue collection, which currently stands at 52%. The campaign aims to stabilise the municipality’s finances and ensure the continued provision of essential services.

Residents with outstanding accounts are urged to visit municipal offices to settle their debts or make payment arrangements. Those unable to afford payments are encouraged to register as indigent in order to qualify for free basic services.

Warning of Service Disconnections

The municipality has also called on residents who are not receiving monthly statements to update their contact details to ensure accurate billing.

In line with municipal legislation, the Mookgophong Local Municipality has warned that it is entitled to disconnect services where accounts remain in arrears. As part of the operation, notices of intention to disconnect services will be issued to residents, businesses, and government entities that fail to settle their accounts.

Improving Service Delivery

Municipal officials say revenue collected through the operation will be used to maintain and improve critical services such as sanitation, road maintenance, and9 water supply.

Makungo has urged all affected customers to cooperate with the campaign to avoid service interruptions and to contribute towards improved service delivery in the area.
